Introduction
Leadership is often discussed in terms of behaviors and traits, but Liz Mellon argues that what truly sets great leaders apart is their way of thinking. "Everyone has an opinion about what leadership is. We may not be able to agree on a description, but, like fine art, we all know a good leader when we see one" (Mellon). In today’s complex, globalized world, understanding how leaders think can provide crucial insights into what makes them successful. This book aims to decode these cognitive patterns and offer a framework for aspiring leaders to enhance their own thinking processes.

No Safety Net
Leaders at the top often feel alone, as they are the ones pushing boundaries and taking the first step into unknown territory. This thinking involves five aspects:
- You Are Alone: High-level leaders recognize that they are often alone in their decisions and must rely on their own conviction to move forward. "As you build up more confidence in your role, you can take more 'alone-ness'" (Ronnie Leten, CEO of Atlas Copco).
- Take the First Step: Leaders must have the courage to venture into uncharted territory. Jasmine Whitbread, CEO of Save the Children, says, "We are deep into uncertainty. This is uncharted territory. At the end of the day it is clearly the right thing to do, so you just have to do it."
- Don’t Get Too Far Ahead: Leaders need to ensure they are not so far ahead that their followers cannot keep up. Effective leadership means bringing others along on the journey.
- Embrace Self-Doubt: Self-doubt is a natural part of leadership. It keeps leaders from becoming complacent and encourages them to listen to diverse perspectives.
- Bravery to Fail: Accepting the possibility of failure is crucial. Leaders must be willing to take risks and learn from mistakes.
Effective leaders push their organizations into new territories, willing to take risks and face uncertainties head-on. They recognize the importance of leading without waiting for permission, and they understand that their role involves moving the organization into uncharted territory, even if it means standing alone. This mindset fosters innovation and prevents stagnation, ensuring that the organization continues to grow and evolve.
